Understanding Cough, Phlegm, and Mucus
A cough is the body’s natural reflex to clear the airways of irritants, infections, or excess mucus. Phlegm is the thick, sticky mucus that is coughed out, while mucus is the liquid produced by the lining of the respiratory tract. Distinguishing between a dry (non‑productive) cough and a productive cough that brings up phlegm helps guide treatment and determine if a deeper medical issue may be present.
